SEA Brand isn’t your typical apparel company. Founders David Baron and Zeshan Muhammedi launched the brand in their college years with the aim of helping the snapback give back to worthy charities. They accomplished this by pairing colorways with different causes, and conducting crowdsourced campaigns that help decide the two colors of each snapback, as well as the organization each hat will benefit.
That isn’t to say they don’t have experience in the apparel game. Atlanta natives Baron and Muhammedi has an eye for business, and got to work producing caps and other merchandise for up-and-coming rappers like Mac Miller. Now, SEA has teamed up with another of Atlanta’s own for its newest hat: Brick Squad Monopoly’s Waka Flocka Flame.
Today, both parties embark on a collaboration that you can take part in, called #WakaNewYear, and they’ve brought Complex along to document every step of the way.
#WakaNewYear is a three-day campaign that will allow fans to choose one of three causes they want to support, which charity will benefit from the fundraising, and finally, the two colors that will comprise the special snapback. Like all of SEA’s caps, 25% of all proceeds will be donated to the chosen cause/charity. The campaign will be promoted on SEA’s Facebook page as well as Waka Flocka Flame’s Facebook page. The first round of voting begins January 1.
When asked about why he chose to partner up with SEA to fulfill his New Year’s Resolution of helping others, Waka said: “I’m an artist who came up because of support from my friends, fans and family. The fact that SEA can connect all of them to a cause that will touch people in the hood, people who are underprivileged, and people who have limitations to sharing their gift moves me. My chance came. Now it’s time to use that chance to help someone else.”
